Human & Social Services - Transfer Program
Associate in Science Degree
Program Description
Massasoit’s Associate in Science in Human & Social Services – Transfer option allows graduates to transfer directly into their junior year at other Massachusetts state colleges. Most students transfer into human services, sociology, psychology, social work, or education programs.
Students in the Human & Social Services Transfer program develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required to work effectively with people in a wide variety of professional settings.
Past graduates have found careers in nursing homes, mental health and developmental disability settings, day care centers, youth programs, alcohol and drug treatment programs, and in other social service agencies. Because many career paths within and outside of these professions require education beyond the associate degree, more than half of Massasoit Human & Social Services graduates transfer to four-year colleges and universities to pursue bachelor’s degrees.
Human & Social Services also offers a Career option.
Supervised field experience is an important part of both programs, as work and internships give students the opportunity to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills to real life situations and to test potential career choices.
Graduates of the Human & Social Services Department’s Transfer and Career Options will:
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with clients, colleagues and supervisors.
- Identify, interpret, and adhere to ethical standards for professional behavior.
- Work together with individuals and groups to assess needs, promote strengths, manage problems, set goals, develop or access resources, and implement and assess action plans.
- Communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
- Develop and implement activities for personal and professional growth in order to maintain professional competency and currency, manage stress, and enhance satisfaction and job performance.
- Evidence civic engagement in their geographical communities or in “communities of affinity” through varied affiliations and activities, (including, but not limited to their placement in community agencies for their field experience course or courses), or via social media experiences.
- Graduates will also
- Successfully transfer to Baccalaureate Degree programs within and beyond Massachusetts.
- Career Option Graduates will also
- Be able to obtain and successfully perform within a variety of entry-level helping positions in areas such as mental health, developmental disabilities, services to children, youth and families, addictions treatment, social services, and gerontology.
